Job Description

General Responsibilities

Reporting to a special education assistant director and a regional school nurse, the special education nurse works collaboratively with the student health and education team to provide routine limited nursing care to students consistent with program procedures. The special education nurse assists in the revision of care plans; responds to the medical needs of students in the class room; and consistent with the individual education plan (IEP) or individual family service plan (IFSP) assists the special education teacher with student needs including communicating with school staff as needed.

Salary

The full salary range for this position is:

LPN: $32.09 - $39.04
RN: $41.55 - $50.56
Offers are made at the entry level of the range.

Assignment:
We are recruiting for a Special Education Nurse to serve the White Salmon Early Learning Center. This position is 12 hrs/wk, school year schedule.

Essential Functions/Other Functions
Essential Functions:

  1. Assess and provide for the basic and critical needs of students with life-threatening medical conditions requiring ongoing physical assessment, nursing treatments, and medication administration.
  2. Provide invasive care within scope of practice (e.g. catheterization of students, rectal administration of diazepam, g-tube feedings).
  3. Document student care administered as part of the student health plan.
  4. Collect health care and educational data provided for assigned students.
  5. Facilitate collaboration and communication between interdisciplinary team members to meet students' goals.
  6. Administer medications and treatments.
  7. Provide student medical status report to the regional school nurse.
  8. Assist the special education teacher with IEP or IFSP goals.
  9. Communicate with school staff as needed for the healthcare needs of students.

Other Functions:

  1. Attend to the physical needs of students, including moving and positioning students & assisting with personal hygiene needs.
  2. May work with specialized medical equipment used by student to insure that equipment is functioning properly.
  3. Supervise students and report students' progress to teacher.
  4. Provide positive behavior management support, consistent with the IEP or IFSP.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications & Skills
Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Hold or eligible to hold a valid Washington State Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) OR Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  2. Current CPR/1st aid certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience as a LPN or RN in a school setting.
  2. Experience in pediatrics.
  3. Knowledge of programs and services for students with disabilities.
  4. Experience in a special education classroom setting.

Working Conditions/Employment Requirements

Working Conditions:

  1. Classroom setting, may move from classroom to classroom to provides services.
  2. Provide assistance and attend to the physical needs of students including moving and positioning students and assisting with personal hygiene needs, including but not limited to: tube feeding, catheterization, changing diapers, toileting.
  3. Sit, stand, stoop to attend to student's needs and to provide instruction.
  4. Ability to physically move and/or lift equipment varying using established procedures.
  5. Regular attendance during assigned work schedule.
  6. Remain on the work site premises for breaks and meal periods to provide for critical care needs of student.
  7. Ride school bus with students to and from school as needed.
Employment Requirements:
  1. Successful completion of a criminal history and fingerprint check through the Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  2. Within three years of employment meet Washington State Core Competencies for paraeducators as defined in WAC 392-172A-02090 (f).
